Jo-Anne has been a photojournalist and animal advocate for over fifteen years. She is the author of We Animals, Captive, and her forthcoming book is entitled The Unbound Project. Jo-Anne is also the subject of the Canadian documentary The Ghosts in Our Machine, which follows her around the world on her quest to document and help non-human animals.
As the title suggests, this slide show presentation is about Jo's journey as a photographer. Rather than focusing on the technical aspects of photography, it's about finding our own unique path and voice as storytellers and artists. Jo-Anne will share stories about some of the amazing people and animals that she has documented for the We Animals project, which has now taken her to over 50 countries around the globe. The audience will meet moon bears rescued from bear bile farms in Asia, gorillas and chimpanzees rescued from the bush meat trade and from medical research labs, as well farmed animals such as pigs and hens who now live at sanctuaries. Jo-Anne hopes that we will all use this powerful tool – the camera – to help make the world a better place for animals, the environment, and we humans

Title: Contemplative Photography
Type: An intentional way of seeing the world and looking at your old passion of photography in a philosophical manner
Description: Introducing “Contemplative Photography”, a way of making pictures, a way of seeing, a way of life. This is a fun and thought-provoking discussion with artistic and abstract imagery dedicated to the philosophical and even spiritualside of photography. In a small group we will raise the bar on how to connect with your subject, whether it is human, nature, or inanimate. Take your time, snap fewer frames and contemplate instead of the usual aimless, rapid-fire photography of the digital age. I am a lifetime teacher and administrator, most recently retired from continuing education at Georgian College teaching a variety of photography courses. As an executive member of Barrie's photo club, I deliver educational segments at meetings teaching both camera gear and software applications. I provide workshops and private tutoring to clients. I photograph both individual and corporate events. I choose to be eclectic in my own personal photography, and am a Getty contributor with over 2700 images for sale. Through Getty, my images have been used in National Geographic 3x, international magazines and ad campaigns, books and book covers, and a variety of media. I am currently a Judge-in-Training with OCCC. My work has been exhibited in juried photography shows in Brampton (Beaux Arts) and Toronto (Steamwhistle for Cancer), and at Barrie's City Hall. I have a permanent photographic exhibit with the Barrie Bridge Club. I have previously spoken to the Midland Club and Barrie Club (monthly mini-sessions, workshops). My work can be seen at www.flickr.com/photos/shotzy and bit.ly/GettyGailShotlander (Getty short address). Melvina McCaw (President emeritus-Barrie Club), Bob Dudly (President-Barrie Club), Tony Florio (mentor, JIT) - all can serve as references. My presentations are power-point/keynote based, with heavy emphasis on photography itself.

Title: The Call of the Wild (Travelling to South Africa)
Type: Powerpoint / Keynote
Description: The call of the wild to see the Big 5 and a host of other animals in Kruger National Park, South Africa is the theme of this presentation.
It starts with a quick discussion around logistics. Should I go alone or with a group? What impact does seasonal timing have? What gear and image storage should I take? How do I prepare for the airport and travel?
The main component of the presentation shows 40 species of animals and birds. The Big 5 (elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, Cape buffalo) and some endangered species are discussed in detail. The presentation talks about key animal behaviours that allows a photographer to anticipate and prepare for making their take-away image. During the presentation, other strategies such as avoiding photography fatigue, capturing a variety of shots from close-up to contextual, and remembering to capture the culture will be highlighted.
The presentation ends with a discussion on keeping the memories alive - in print and in books. The presentation has interest for the accomplished photographer as well as the beginner.
